Tongue Scrapers
Studies confirm that cleaning the tongue will significantly reduce the formation of micro-organisms within the mouth, thus reducing the total plaque accumulation on the teeth.
Historical background
Tongue cleaning has been used since ancient times. Handcrafted tongue scrapers used to be made out of sterling silver, ivory and tortoise shell.
Definition of a Tongue Scraper
A tongue scraper is an oral hygiene tool designed to clean the micro-organisms, food, and dead cells from the top of the tongue. The micro-organisms that grow on the tongue are responsible for common gum, teeth, and general health problems. Decaying microbes also produce compounds on the rear most part of tongue that are responsible for bad breath.
Many Shapes and Sizes
Tongue scrapers come in all shapes and sizes. They can be made from plastic or metal. Their effectiveness varies and is based on the quality of contact with the tongue surface. These are a sample of just a few:

Note: A kitchen spoon may also be used to get the same effect.
Toothbrushes are Not as Effective
Although many people attempt to brush their tongues, toothbrushes are often not effective because of the spongy nature of the tongue. Tongue cleaners are shaped to more effectively clean the surface of the tongue.
Importance of tongue cleaning
It is estimated that approximately 70% of the microorganisms found in the oral cavity are living on the surface of the tongue. These multiply, and through the saliva, can reach the teeth and gums. These microorganisms are responsible for plaque on the teeth, which lead to tooth decay, gum infections and bone loss, and can result in tooth loss.
